Screening Politics presents: VOL SPECIAL
di 09 dec 2014

In 2013, more than 3500 persons were imprisoned by the Dutch government, even though they had committed no crime. These persons were irregular immigrants. Foreigner detention has become a standard instrument of immigration policy in other European countries as well.

Only very few people have access to foreigner detention centers, where irregular immigrants wait for deportation to their home countries. Fernand Melgar’s Vol Spécial (2011) is based on nine months of immersion in such a center in Switzerland.

This powerful, moving and disturbing documentary gives us a rare view of life inside a foreigner detention center. The stories behind the locked cells are truly heartbreaking. A must-see for anyone interested in immigration policy.
