Sign up now for our first pub lecture of the year at Bar Bukowski on the 15th of September, with the topic of Sustainability Policies in Transnational Governance! This year, the pub lecture will be given by Dr. John Grin, who specializes in Public Policy and Governance. Pub lectures are lectures given in a casual environment by experts in the field while students can have some drinks and snacks. Feel free to have a chat (and a beer!) with your fellow students or Dr. John Grin after the event to discuss the intricacies of sustainability policies in governance. We look forward to having you there!
Sustainability issues are often border crossing, and therefore can best be dealt with through transnational or international bodies. Sustainability issues often also require bottom-up initiatives, knowledge and innovations – things typically concentrated in cities. Not surprisingly, therefore, cities play key roles in sustainability politics and governance. But how do they fit in border-crossing polities? Are they mainly implementers of policies made in the UN or the EU? Are they dependent on their national governments? Or do they play a much more crucial, decisive roles in transnational governance? And #howthen?
To learn about these questions of contemporary public policy and governance, we will discuss experiences involving Singapore, Latin American and European cities (including Amsterdam), taking both a helicopter and an actor perspective.
